Cinnamon has been used for thousands of years. The Chinese have used it since 2700 B.C. to treat fever, diarrhea and menstrual problems. It is said to increase the circulation of qi (vital energy). Ayurvedic practitioners utilize it for digestive issues and menstrual complications. Integrative medicine use cinnamon for diabetes, PCOS and irritable bowel disease.

Studies have shown that it has an insulin-like effect and stabilizes or reduces blood sugar. It has also been found to decrease total cholesterol, triglycerides and LDL.

I utilize it frequently with my patients that have PCOS where it has been proven to improve menstrual cyclicity. Future research with cinnamon may include: neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s; protection against cancers especially colon; and its antibacterial, fungal and maybe viral effects
